How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft
Every Minecraft survival world leads to one defining destination: standing in a dark stone brick chamber, watching 12 starry void blocks ignite inside an End Portal frame. Reaching a Stronghold is the pinnacle of Overworld progression, your doorway to defeating the Ender Dragon, raiding floating End Cities, and equipping Elytra wings.
However, many players treat finding a Stronghold as a simple game of throwing Eyes of Ender across a continent until one drops into the ground. In reality, Strongholds are complex procedural structures governed by precise mathematics, ring algorithms, and room generation rules.
This guide explains how Strongholds generate, how players triangulate their location with Eyes of Ender, and what to expect from the portal room. It also covers Silverfish and seed tracking with MCSeedShare.

Stronghold generation follows completely different mathematical algorithms depending on whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition.
Java Edition: The 128-Ring Generation Algorithm
In Java Edition, world generation places exactly 128 Strongholds per world across 8 concentric rings centered around world spawn (X=0, Z=0):
| Ring Level | Total Strongholds | Distance Range From World Spawn | Angle Spacing Between Strongholds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring 1 (Inner) | 3 Strongholds | 1,280 to 2,816 blocks | Equal 120-degree intervals |
| Ring 2 | 6 Strongholds | 4,352 to 5,888 blocks | Equal 60-degree intervals |
| Ring 3 | 10 Strongholds | 7,424 to 8,960 blocks | Equal 36-degree intervals |
| Ring 4 | 15 Strongholds | 10,496 to 12,032 blocks | Equal 24-degree intervals |
| Ring 5 | 21 Strongholds | 13,568 to 15,104 blocks | Equal 17.1-degree intervals |
| Ring 6 | 28 Strongholds | 16,640 to 18,176 blocks | Equal 12.8-degree intervals |
| Ring 7 | 36 Strongholds | 19,712 to 21,248 blocks | Equal 10-degree intervals |
| Ring 8 (Outer) | 9 Strongholds | 22,784 to 24,320 blocks | Equal 40-degree intervals |
Because Ring 1 contains only 3 Strongholds, the first Stronghold relative to your spawn point is almost always located between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks away.
Bedrock Edition: Village Alignment Rules
Unlike Java's ring grid, Bedrock Edition generates an unlimited number of Strongholds across the world. Bedrock world generation prioritizes placing Strongholds directly underneath Villages.
When throwing an Eye of Ender on Bedrock Edition, the Eye will almost always guide you directly to a surface village, with the Stronghold buried under the village well or central meeting bell!
Bedrock Generation Glitch: On Bedrock Edition, ocean ravines, mineshafts, or deepslate caves occasionally clip through a Stronghold, destroying the portal room. If an Eye leads you to a broken Stronghold, move to the next nearest village!
Eye of Ender Mechanics & Physics
Before throwing Eyes of Ender across your world, understanding their physics saves time and resources:
- Flight Path: When thrown, an Eye of Ender floats up into the air, travels 12 blocks horizontally in the direction of the nearest Stronghold's portal room, and hovers for 3 seconds before dropping.
- Shatter Chance: Every throw has an independent 20% chance to shatter and vanish upon landing, and an 80% chance to drop as an item you can pick back up.
- Downward Dip: Once you are within 12 blocks of the Stronghold's entry point, throwing an Eye causes it to fly downwards toward the ground instead of rising up into the air.

Speedrunner Triangulation Math (The 2-Eye Method)
You do not need to throw 10 to 15 Eyes of Ender to locate a Stronghold. You can pinpoint the exact chunk using just 2 Eyes and basic geometry:
Step-by-Step Triangulation Guide:
- First Throw: Stand still, press
F3to open the debug screen, and look at yourFacingangle (e.g.Facing: south (-14.2 / 12.0)). Throw an Eye of Ender, align your crosshair precisely with the Eye in the air, and record your exactX1,Z1, and angleA1. - Travel 300+ Blocks Sideways: Turn 90 degrees perpendicular to where the Eye flew and sprint 300 to 500 blocks in a straight line.
- Second Throw: Throw a second Eye, align your crosshair, and record your new
X2,Z2, and angleA2. - Plot the Intersection: The point where line
A1and lineA2intersect is the exact X and Z coordinate of the Stronghold!
Chunk (4, 4) Starter Staircase Secret
Once your Eye of Ender plunges down into the dirt, don't dig down randomly in a 16x16 chunk.
In Java Edition, every Stronghold's spiral starter staircase always generates at relative chunk coordinate (X=4, Z=4)!
How to Use the (4, 4) Rule:
- Press
F3 + Gon Java Edition to display yellow 16x16 chunk boundaries. - Step inside the 16x16 chunk where the Eye went into the ground.
- Look at your
F3debug screen line readingBlock: 4 Y 4 in chunk x z. - Dig straight down at that exact block. You will land directly on the top stone brick step of the spiral staircase!
Room-by-Room Architectural Guide
Strongholds are large procedural complexes containing up to 50 interconnected rooms built from stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, and cracked stone bricks. Understanding room layouts helps you navigate corridors efficiently without getting lost.
1. The Spiral Starter Staircase
The entry point of every Stronghold. Features a spiral staircase built from stone brick stairs wrapping around a central pillar.
2. Five-Way Crossing Hubs
Central intersection rooms with 5 door openings leading to different wings. These hubs feature stone brick pillars, wooden torches, and central fountain pools.
3. Libraries (Single & Two-Story)
Libraries are the most valuable non-portal rooms inside a Stronghold:
- Single-Story Library: Contains bookshelves, cobwebs, a chest on the main floor, and wooden balconies.
- Two-Story Library: Features double-height bookshelf walls, cobweb nests, upper balcony walkways, and 2 loot chests containing enchanted books (such as Mending, Silk Touch, and Unbreaking III), paper, and compasses!

4. Prison Cell Blocks
Corridors lined with iron bar doors and stone brick walls. Features wooden doors, levers, and empty cells. (Useful for storing gear or setting up temporary respawn beds).
5. Storerooms & Chest Corridors
Small hallway nooks containing wooden chests filled with iron ingots, bread, golden apples, iron armor, and saddles.
6. The End Portal Room
The heart of the Stronghold. The Portal Room is a elevated stone brick chamber built over a pool of lava:
- Silverfish Spawner: Positioned on the stairs leading up to the portal frame.
- End Portal Frame: A 3x3 ring of 12 green-and-gold frame blocks hovering over lava.
Mathematical Probability of Portal Frame Activation
When a world is generated, each of the 12 End Portal frame blocks has an independent 10% probability of spawning with an Eye of Ender already inserted.
Here is the complete probability table for natural Eye generation:
| Number of Natural Eyes Present | Probability Percentage | Odds of Occurrence |
|---|---|---|
| 0 Eyes | 28.24% | ~1 in 3.5 Strongholds |
| 1 Eye | 37.66% | ~1 in 2.6 Strongholds |
| 2 Eyes | 23.01% | ~1 in 4.3 Strongholds |
| 3 Eyes | 8.52% | ~1 in 11.7 Strongholds |
| 4 Eyes | 2.13% | ~1 in 47 Strongholds |
| 5 Eyes | 0.38% | ~1 in 263 Strongholds |
| 6 Eyes | 0.05% | ~1 in 2,000 Strongholds |
| 12 Eyes (Fully Completed) | 0.0000000001% | 1 in 1 Trillion Worlds |
Because of these odds, always carry at least 12 Eyes of Ender on your expedition to guarantee you can activate the portal!

Silverfish & Infested Stone Mechanics
Inside Strongholds, stone brick walls often contain Infested Stone (formerly Monster Egg blocks).
Infested Block Warnings:
- Mining Speed: Infested stone bricks mine slightly faster by hand than normal stone bricks.
- Swarm Reaction: Breaking an Infested Stone block alerts all nearby Infested Stone blocks within a 21x21x21 area, causing Silverfish to burst out of the walls in a massive swarm!
- Silk Touch Solution: Mining Infested Stone with a Silk Touch pickaxe drops the normal stone brick block without spawning a Silverfish or alerting the swarm!
Silverfish Swarm: Never hit a Silverfish with a low-damage weapon! If a Silverfish survives an attack, it calls all nearby infested wall blocks to break open!
