How to Find Slime Chunks in Minecraft (and Build a Slime Farm)
Whether you are building flying machines, hidden redstone piston doors, lead hitches for animal transport, or sticky piston farms, securing a reliable supply of slimeballs is one of the most satisfying achievements in Minecraft.
While hunting slimes in swamp biomes during a full moon works in early survival, standing in a swamp at night is slow and dangerous. Building an automated underground farm inside a Slime Chunk provides an infinite supply of slimeballs on demand, generating thousands of items while you work at your base.
This guide explains how slime chunks work, how Java and Bedrock differ, and how to check a location before you start digging a farm.

What Is a Slime Chunk?
Minecraft worlds are divided into a grid of 16×16 block columns called "chunks." World generation code marks exactly 10% of all chunks as designated Slime Chunks.
Inside these specific 16×16 areas, slimes possess the unique ability to spawn underground, regardless of how bright the area is lit!
Spawning Conditions:
- Depth Limit: Must be below Y=40 down to Y=-64.
- Clearance: Requires at least 3 blocks of vertical clearance for large slimes to materialize.
- Player Distance: Spawning occurs when the player is between 24 and 128 blocks away.
- Light Immunity: Slimes in slime chunks ignore light levels completely, allowing you to torch floors to block normal hostile mobs like zombies and creepers.

Java vs. Bedrock Edition Differences
Before clearing out underground rooms, it is critical to understand how your game edition handles slime chunks:
| Game Edition | Slime Chunk Algorithm | Seed Required? | Universal Coordinates? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Pseudo-random seed calculation | YES (Type /seed in game) | Unique per seed |
| Bedrock Edition | Fixed mathematical matrix | NO (Fixed grid for all worlds) | YES (Identical in every Bedrock world!) |
Bedrock Universal Secret: Coordinate X=0, Z=0 to X=15, Z=15 is a Slime Chunk on EVERY Bedrock world ever created!
2 Ways to Find a Slime Chunk
Method 1: Use the MCSeedShare Slime Chunk Finder
The fastest way to locate exact 16×16 chunk coordinates is using the MCSeedShare Slime Chunk Finder.
- Type
/seedin game to retrieve your seed number (Java). - Open the MCSeedShare Slime Chunk Finder.
- Select your edition (Java 1.21 or Bedrock 1.21).
- Hover over green grid squares to copy exact X and Z chunk boundaries directly into your game notes!
Method 2: Vanilla F3+G Chunk Grid Mining (Java Edition)
If you want to identify a slime chunk organically without web tools:
- Press
F3 + Gon Java Edition to toggle yellow 16×16 chunk border lines. - Mine down below Y=40 (ideally around Y=10 or Y=-30).
- Clear out contiguous 16×16 rooms that align precisely with chunk borders.
- Separate adjacent 16×16 rooms with fences so mobs cannot wander between chunks.
- Torch up the floor, step 30 blocks away, and wait. The room where a slime spawns is your Slime Chunk!
3-Step Slime Farm Excavation & Lure Guide
Lighting Rule: Torches only stop creepers, zombies, and skeletons from spawning. Slimes in Slime Chunks spawn in any light level, so illuminate every floor block!
- Clear a 16×16 Room: Mine out the entire 16×16 chunk area between Y=30 and Y=10.
- Build 3-Block High Platforms: Construct spawning floors with 3 blocks of air space between levels.
- Set Up Iron Golem Lures: Position an Iron Golem behind iron bars in a wall niche. Slimes naturally pathfind toward Iron Golems and bounce straight into your magma block collection floor!
Drop your seed into the MCSeedShare Slime Chunk Finder to locate your chunk boundaries, clear out your platforms, and enjoy infinite slimeballs!
