How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft
Diamonds matter early because they open the door to a diamond pickaxe, an enchanting table, obsidian, and eventually Netherite upgrades. The best way to look for them depends on whether you prefer branch mining, caves, or a prepared late-game beacon setup.
The old advice to mine at Y=11 is outdated for current world generation. Diamonds are more common deep underground, with the most practical branch-mining level around Y=-58.
This guide compares diamond levels, air exposure, branch-mining layouts, Fortune III drops, aquifer diving, and MCSeedShare's seed tools.

Diamond Generation Math & Y-Level Charts
In modern Minecraft (1.18 through 1.21+), diamond ore generates anywhere below Y=16 all the way down to bedrock at Y=-64.
However, diamond ore distribution follows a triangular density curve:
Visual Triangular Ore Density Curve
| Y-Level Depth | Spawn Probability | Density Curve Bar | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y=16 | 0.05% | █░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ | Diamond Spawn Begins |
| Y=0 | 0.30% | ████░░░░░░░░░░░░ | Medium Density |
| Y=-32 | 0.65% | ████████░░░░░░░░ | High Density |
| Y=-50 | 0.95% | ████████████░░░░ | Deepslate Layer |
| Y=-58 | 1.20% | ████████████████ | PEAK MAX DENSITY |
| Y=-64 | 0.00% | █░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ | Bedrock Obstructed |
Depth & Density Comparison Table:
| Y-Level Range | Ore Density | Deepslate Hardness | Mining Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y=15 to Y=0 | Very Low | Normal Stone | Not recommended for targeted diamond mining |
| Y=-1 to Y=-40 | Medium | Deepslate (1.5x Mining Time) | Good for open cave exploration |
| Y=-41 to Y=-57 | High | Deepslate | Great for branch mining corridors |
| Y=-58 | PEAK MAX | Deepslate | THE BEST Y-LEVEL FOR DIAMOND STRIP MINING |
| Y=-59 to Y=-64 | Peak | Bedrock Obstructions | Bedrock blocks block pickaxe mining paths |
The Air Exposure Penalty Explained
Diamond veins exposed to a cave often look smaller than veins hidden inside solid deepslate. That difference comes from how ore generation handles air exposure.
World generation code applies a 50% Air Exposure Penalty to diamond veins:
- Exposed Veins: When an ore vein generates adjacent to open air in a cave, each individual ore block in the vein has a 50% chance of failing to spawn.
- Unexposed Veins: Veins that generate completely encased inside solid deepslate or underwater inside flooded aquifers do not suffer from the penalty, generating at 100% full size (up to 12 diamonds per vein)!
Mining Secret: Solid deepslate branch mining and underwater cave diving produce significantly larger diamond veins than exploring dry open air caverns!
3 Professional Mining Strategies
Method 1: Branch Mining at Y=-58 (Maximum Volume)
Branch mining remains the single safest, most methodical way to accumulate stacks of diamonds:
(Maintain 2 blocks of solid wall between side branches to maximize block visibility)
- Mine a 2×1 staircase down to Y=-58 (stand on Y=-58 with eyes at Y=-57).
- Dig a main central hallway straight ahead.
- Every 3 blocks along your main hallway, dig side branch tunnels extending 20 to 30 blocks outwards.
- Leaving 2 blocks of solid wall between branches ensures you see every block while minimizing unnecessary digging.

Method 2: Deep Aquifer Diving (Full Vein Spawns)
Flooded underground caverns (aquifers) between Y=-30 and Y=-58 can be good places to look. Because water replaces open air, the game's "air exposure penalty" does not apply.
- Gear Required: Potion of Water Breathing, Respiration III Helmet, or doors/ladders to create air pockets.
- Result: Deepslate diamond veins underwater generate at full 8-to-12-block size!

Method 3: Haste II Beacon Strip Mining
For late-game players looking to clear thousands of deepslate blocks per hour:
- Construct a 4-tier Netherite/Iron Beacon at Y=-58.
- Select Haste II primary power.
- Use an Efficiency V Netherite Pickaxe.
- With Haste II + Efficiency V, deepslate breaks instantly ("instamining"), allowing you to clear entire chunks in minutes!
Fortune I, II, III Drops Probability Table
Never mine diamonds with a standard pickaxe if you can avoid it. Here is the mathematical drop probability breakdown when using Fortune enchantments:
| Pickaxe Enchantment | Average Diamonds Per Block | Drop Range | Odds of Multi-Drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Enchantment | 1.0 Diamonds | 1 | 100% chance of 1 diamond |
| Fortune I | 1.33 Diamonds | 1 to 2 | 33% chance of 2 diamonds |
| Fortune II | 1.75 Diamonds | 1 to 3 | 25% chance of 2, 25% chance of 3 |
| Fortune III | 2.50 Diamonds | 1 to 4 | 33% 2, 33% 3, 33% 4 diamonds |
Silk Touch Reserve Strategy: If you find diamonds early before acquiring Fortune III, mine the ore blocks using a Silk Touch pickaxe and store the ore blocks in a chest at base until you unlock Fortune III!
Diamond Crafting Progression Priority
When you bring home your first batch of diamonds, spend them in the correct order to maximize survival progression:
- Pickaxe (3 Diamonds): Unlocks obsidian mining and Nether portal creation.
- Enchanting Table (2 Diamonds): Unlocks level 30 enchantments.
- Diamond Sword (2 Diamonds): High damage melee weapon.
- Diamond Armor Set (24 Diamonds): Full protective armor set (Chestplate 8, Leggings 7, Boots 4, Helmet 5).
- Netherite Upgrade Reserves: Keep extra diamond gear stored for upgrading into Netherite using Smithing Templates!
Check ore distributions for your seed using the MCSeedShare Ore Finder and open your world layout on the MCSeedShare Interactive Seed Map.
Dig down to Y=-58, bring a water bucket, and start building your diamond stash!
