How to Find a Mineshaft in Minecraft
There is a distinct moment when you are exploring deep underground, turning a corner in a natural cave, and suddenly seeing dark oak support beams, fence posts, and rail tracks spanning across a cavern floor. You have found an Abandoned Mineshaft.
Abandoning Mineshafts are among the oldest and most rewarding structures in Minecraft. Because mineshaft corridor networks can stretch across hundreds of blocks, running into one while caving is common once you know where to look.
From harvesting hundreds of iron rails for base transit systems to clearing Cave Spider spawners for mob XP farms and looting chest minecarts for golden apples, mineshafts are a treasure trove for survival players.
This guide covers where Mineshafts generate, how Badlands variants differ, and what to do when you find a Cave Spider spawner or a chest minecart. It also shows how to use MCSeedShare to check a seed before you start digging.

Cave Spider Spawners & Poison Tactics
Cave Spiders are smaller than normal spiders, allowing them to squeeze through 1x0.5 block gaps and inflict Poison damage.
Clearing Cave Spider Spawners:
- Bring Shears: Shears clear cobwebs around spawners instantly without consuming pickaxe durability.
- Carry Milk Buckets: Drinking milk instantly clears Cave Spider poison status effects.
- Light Muffles Spawning: Place torches on top and on all 4 sides of the spawner to raise light level above 9 and disable spawning.

Rail Harvesting Math
Mineshafts contain hundreds of Rail, Powered Rail, and Detector Rail blocks.
- Water Bucket Harvesting: Pouring a single water bucket down a mineshaft corridor pops up all rail tracks instantly, allowing you to collect 200+ rails in minutes without mining them individually!
