How to Find an Amethyst Geode in Minecraft
Crack open the outer shell of an Amethyst Geode, and you are greeted by one of the most mesmerizing sights and sounds in Minecraft. Chimes of ringing crystal chimes resonate through the cavern, while purple amethyst clusters glow softly against white calcite and dark basalt walls.
Introduced in the Caves & Cliffs update, Amethyst Geodes are compact spherical treasure caves generated throughout the Overworld. Beyond their beautiful chime sounds and purple crystals, geodes yield materials essential for crafting Spyglasses, Tinted Glass, and Calibrated Sculk Sensors.
However, harvesting amethyst requires knowing the golden rule of geode mechanics: Budding Amethyst blocks cannot be moved, even with Silk Touch.
This guide explains the three-layer geode structure, how amethyst grows, and what you can build with it. It also covers AFK farm layouts and finding geodes with MCSeedShare.

Feature Spotlight
World Feature Note: Amethyst Geodes generate as spherical subterranean world features across various biomes (they are not a biome and cannot be located with /locate biome).
Amethyst Geode
Spherical underground crystal caverns composed of smooth basalt, calcite, and growing amethyst clusters.

Every Amethyst Geode is constructed from three distinct concentric block layers:
- Outer Shell (Smooth Basalt): A dark grey outer ring that makes geodes easy to spot protruding into open cave air or ocean floors.
- Middle Layer (Calcite): A bright white stone layer wrapping around the interior.
- Inner Core (Amethyst Blocks & Budding Amethyst): The hollow interior lined with purple Amethyst Blocks, Budding Amethyst, and growing Amethyst Clusters.

Amethyst Growth Stages & Harvesting Math
Budding Amethyst blocks feature an X pattern on their faces and grow Amethyst Clusters across 4 distinct stages:
- Growth Sequence: Small Bud → Medium Bud → Large Bud → Full Amethyst Cluster (Harvestable!)
| Growth Stage | Pickaxe Required | Yield Without Fortune | Yield With Fortune III |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small / Medium / Large Bud | Any Pickaxe | Drops 0 Shards | Drops 0 Shards |
| Full Amethyst Cluster | Iron / Diamond Pickaxe | 4 Amethyst Shards | Up to 16 Shards! |
Never Break Budding Amethyst: Budding Amethyst blocks drop nothing when broken, even with Silk Touch! Leave them in place to grow infinite crystal clusters!
Unique Crafting Recipes
- Spyglass: 1 Amethyst Shard + 2 Copper Ingots (Zooms view).
- Tinted Glass: 4 Amethyst Shards + 1 Glass (Blocks light, visually clear).
- Calibrated Sculk Sensor: 3 Amethyst Shards + 1 Sculk Sensor (Filters redstone frequencies).
